The Science Behind Ideal Protein
Without getting too technical, Ideal Protein is based on the science behind insulin – a major culprit in weight gain. By following the Ideal Protein diet, your insulin production is dramatically reduced when you limit your intake of insulin-triggering simple and complex carbohydrates.
But carbohydrate reserves are the first thing your body draws upon for energy. The other two things – drawn from at the same time – are stores of muscle and fat.
It makes sense, then, if you lower your intake of carbohydrates, you must increase your intake of muscle-building protein in order to spare your muscle from being depleted. Maintaining muscle keeps your metabolism functioning at a normal rate, helping you burn more fat. A normal metabolism also means when you are ready to re-introduce healthy carbohydrates and fat to your diet, you will not regain the weight you worked so hard to lose.
Ideal Protein at Town Center Family Medicine
Your weight loss program at Town Center Family Medicine will be offered our by our Registered Dietitian, Jayne Vecchio.
During this approximately one-hour session, Jayne will go into more detail about the science behind the program, making sure you fully understand how and why it can work for you. Together, you and Jayne will discuss your goals and decide if Ideal Protein is a good fit for you.
The Ideal Protein Program consists of four phases:
Phase 1 is the weight loss phase. You will follow a prescribed diet plan until 100% of your weight loss goal has been achieved. For the first few days, we will check in with you daily by phone as you get accustomed to your new diet. After that, weekly visits to our office are included for coaching, education, and support.
Phase 2 begins once you have reached your weight loss goal. For a period of two weeks, you will transition out of the weight loss phase as you introduce some additional food choices at lunchtime.
Phase 3 is a 14-day gradual reintroduction of healthy carbohydrates and fats into your morning meal. This will gently reawaken your pancreas which has been on hiatus from insulin production since the start of the program.
Phase 4 is the Maintenance Phase based on the principles you have learned throughout the program. Congratulations! You have learned a healthier way of eating and living!
